Alexandre Camacho wins Rali Vinho da Madeira
Alexandre Camacho won and set a new record of triumphs in the Rali Vinho da Madeira. The Madeiran driver, who was already the only one to hold five victories in the event, raised the bar to six successes in the island classic. At the wheel of a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo and navigated by Pedro Calado, Camacho moved to the front of the race almost halfway through the second of the three days of competition. From that stage he never lost the lead. He set new benchmarks on some of the eight of the 14 stages he was fastest on.
Second-placed Giandomenico Basso was the only other driver to challenge for victory. In a car identical to the victorious driver's, the Italian took the lead soon after the start of the second section, won four timed sections but could not stop the momentum of the team that has won six of the last seven editions of the Club Sports da Madeira organisation. Apart from these competitors, only Kris Meeke was at the front. The British driver of a Hyundai i20N Rally2 was the first guide but dropped out after an accident on SS 3.
The lowest place on the podium belonged to José Pedro Fontes, who collected the most points for the national championship. The Citroën C3 Rally2 driver was also able to hold off the attack of Simone Campedelli, fourth, who had a growing race.
On a similar course, the young Spaniard Diego Ruiloba, sixth, with another Citroën C3 Rally2, made his debut on the island. Behind him were some of the other outstanding drivers in the Portuguese championship, Armindo Araújo, Ricardo Teodósio, Miguel Correia, Pedro Meireles and Bernardo Sousa.
