Three Rally competitors in Rome
The Rally di Roma Capital, the sixth ERC event, was held this weekend and three of the teams that will be taking part in the Rali Vinho da Madeira later this week were on the Italian tarmac. The race was won by Andrea Crugnola with a Citroën C3 Rally2 and in second place was Giandomenico Basso, driving a Skoda Fabia RS Rally2.
The Italian driver was always fighting for the podium places and, during the first stage, in a lively duel with Yoann Bonato. From the moment the Frenchman punctured, Basso was in a comfortable position in second place, but he didn't let up, finishing just over 20 seconds behind the winner.
Italian Simone Campedelli didn't get off to a good start but quickly recovered positions and looked assured of a place in the top five. However, the Skoda Fabia Raly2 Evo driver would be another of those who punctured and fell many places, concluding the event in 12th place.
Miguel Caires from Madeira was also at the competition, using a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo. In what was his debut in a championship event, he drove between the 30th and 40th fastest in the class until he punctured, spent a long time on a rim, and was forced to give up. He returned for the second stage in super-rally form, back to the level he had been running in the opening kilometres, and crossed the finish line in 68th position.
