Forty drivers confirmed in the Rally Madeira Legend

Just a week for the entries’ deadline of the Rally Madeira Legend, a competition that will hit the roads on the 29th and 30th October, and there are already forty confirmed drivers in the Club Sports da Madeira Organization. Besides these drivers, about 20 have shown their interest in such event and should, in the next few days, complete their entry applications in the competition that will have Pedro Melvill Araújo as the Clerk of the Course. Amongst the enrolled participants, there are many motorsport references, both in a regional and national level, in a list that includes regional and national champions, as well as the world champion, Massimo Biasion. The not yet confirmed presence of a few drivers is due to the logistic problems that a few teams are facing to bring to Madeira their vehicles, which will also take part in some other similar international competitions. The list of vehicles already enrolled in the start of the competition is very eclectic and includes several generations of models that have been making, for many years, the delight of the growing number of enthusiasts of this type of competition. Different models of Ford, Audi and Lancia will fill an outstanding sample of vehicles from the group B, as well as several vehicles of the nostalgic group N and A will also be highlighted. One of the curious aspects of this competition will be the presence of Rui Ribeiro’s Ford Escort Mk I, which won, in 1975, the Rali Vinho da Madeira with “Janica” Clemente behind the wheel.

Alexandre Lourenço brings an Audi to Rally Madeira Legend

The Rally Madeira Legend will have Alexandre Lourenço behind the wheel of an Audi Quattro A2. The driver, teamed up with the co-driver José Lourenço, had his debut in rallies in 1997 with a VW GTi but wasn’t racing until the beginning of the previous decade, in which he was, many times the driver of one of the safety vehicles of different competitions, mostly of which behind the wheels of a Mitsubishi Lancer. Nonetheless, he recently became the driver of his current vehicle. Audi Quattro A2 is a vehicle recently adapted to a competition. In the last few years it performed in many rallies in Latvia with Ivars Velme behind the wheel. Always the the same driver, it was also part of the two editions of Rallylegend in San Marino. After that, it shifted to the hands of Alexandre Lourenço who, this year, has already driven it in the RallySpirit Show.

Rui Conceição confirmed in Rally Madeira Legend

Rui Conceição, teamed up with Roberto Fernandes, is confirmed as one of the drivers that will start Rally Madeira Legend, a competition that will be on the road between the 29th and 30th October. Conceição, the 65 years old driver, is a name that needs no introduction in a Region where he was one of the key figures of the rallies between the seventies and the previous decade. A driver that shone in many of the vehicles he drove throughout the years, he was a Regional Production Champion in 1999 and Regional Champion in absolute standings in 1994 and 1995. The vehicle used by the team Ford Escort RS Cosworth of the Tourism Group has a history as enriching as the driver himself. Being the vehicle that conquered two absolute regional sceptres to the driver, it had previously allowed Fernando Peres to be this motorsports National Champion. This vehicle was outside Portugal and only returned to Madeira in 2013. It was then a constant presence in the Madeiran roads until 2015 and has only been used in selected events since then.

Highlighting other drivers

Besides the drivers who stood out in the first absolute standings, many other drivers should be highlighted in the 62nd edition of Rali Vinho da Madeira. Not only the two Madeiran drivers who were fighting for the victory of the event, but also two other drivers were the leading figures of the duel for the leadership of two-wheel drive vehicles. Rui Jorge Fernandes, driving his Renault Clio R3T, ended up winning the category, nevertheless, throughout the entire competition they couldn’t stop feeling the pressure of João Silva and the debut of his Renault Clio Rally4. Right behind him, Dinarte Baptista had a very effective performance, as he was another driver to have more drawbacks in an event set by very unstable weather conditions. Many problems had the competitors of the RGT group in their powerful Porsche 997 GT3, extremely powerful in such competition. That said, highlight to the performance of Filipe Freitas who, slowly regaining his positions, still managed to be in the top ten of absolute standings. Very cherished by the spectators due to their performance were Cláudio Nóbrega in his Datsun 1.200 and Miguel Gouveia with a BMW E36 320i.

How were the results of the Portuguese Rallies Championship?

Absolute standing in the second place of Rali Vinho da Madeira, Bruno Magalhães was the winner of the event regarding the Portuguese rallies championship. With his first victory of the year, the driver of Hyundai i20 R5 regained part of his disadvantage in the competition. Fourth among the Portuguese Rallies Championship drivers, Ricardo Teodósio in his Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo had a competition with many drawbacks, nevertheless, his outcome allowed him to shorten the difference for the leadership of the championship. As a leader is still Armindo Araújo, fifth among the national drivers, after a rally set by the lost time with a spin or a punctured tyre. Miguel Correia was the sixth and has now a similar position in the championship with his Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo.  Right behind him in the competition organized by Club Sports da Madeira, Paulo Neto has a similar position in the competition promoted by FPAK. What the top 5 winners said

Alexandre Camacho: “our effort was rewarded”  “We accomplished such victory from the bottom to the top. Our effort was rewarded. I would like to express my appreciation to Miguel Nunes, a very strong opponent, as it was so inglorious that his race would end like this. We have both taken many risks and I’ve probably taken even more in order to regain time. Bruno Magalhães: “A feeling of victory” “We finish this rally we a feeling of victory, as we have concluded our goals. I have failed in some choices, nevertheless, the car was great and I am thankful to the team for that. I would like to be able to come back to this rally in order to fight for absolute standings”. José Pedro Fontes: “Best outcome” “Our outcome has been better than our performance. We would like to have won for the Portuguese Rally championship, and that did not happen. We feel sorry for what happened to Miguel Nunes and I would also like to congratulate  Alexandre Camacho as well as Bruno Magalhães”. Pedro Paixão: “A very challenging rally” “I have no words for how this rally was challenging, filled with drawbacks. It is rewarding to be in the top 5, as we only regained time in the last stage, and we were still able to finish in the fourth place. Despite it all, what we did was very rewarding". Jan Solans: “I hope we can come back” “I am very thankful to the team for everything they did for me. We were able to finish in the top 5 standings and that’s excellent, if we consider the fact that this was our debut in the competition and we had to overcome our lack of knowledge of the Island’s roads. I hope I will be back to use this experience” .

Alexandre Camacho is the winner of Rali Vinho da Madeira for the fourth time

Alexandre Camacho became a record winner of Rali Vinho da Madeira, by becoming, for the fourth time, the leader of a competition that even had a bad start. With a few wrong choices of tyres and setups, the driver of Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo was 18 seconds from leadership by the end of the first four stages of the competition. Still, he never backed down and got a revival that allowed him to reduce the disadvantage. Also helped by some mistakes of his main opponent, Camacho was able to start the last stage 6,7 seconds of the leader, a difference that he reduced until 1,7 seconds in the final stage. That’s where he raced with tyres for dry roads in wet tarmac and turned his opponent’s misfortune into a benefit, in order to celebrate a victory that brightens not only his persistence but also his tactic sense in many occasions. If Alexandre Camacho was the image of joy while returning to Funchal, Miguel Nunes was the mirror of misfortune. Also in a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo, Nunes was leading the competition organized by Club Sports da Madeira, from the first to the prior to the last special stage and was forced to withdraw, although he finished the last stage. In a very difficult road, he was not able to avoid a spin and ended up with the damaged suspension. Who also took advantage of Nunes’ misfortune was Bruno Magalhães and José Pedro Fontes, as they conquered the places on the podium. Magalhães, author of an excellent performance, with a Hyundai i20 R5, finished with a second position, equivalent, in terms of championship, to the Portuguese Rally Championship winner. Right behind him, is José Pedro Fontes, in a Citroën C3 Rally2, has the third place on the podium.  Pedro Paixão would have been on the podium, however, due to the time lost with a punctured tyre, went down to the tenth position, still, with a great revival, ended up in the fourth place. The Spanish driver, Jan Solans had his debut in Madeira with a Citroën C3 Rally2 and was the fifth, after a performance where he made a few mistakes, had drawbacks due to his lack of experience in the competition, although he was also the author of a few excellent timings.
