A Calm Rally

In 2021, Gil Freitas decided to bet in a new vehicle, the Subaru S14 WRC, and should debut such car in the Rali Vinho da Madeira. The arrival process had a delay and, in such circumstances, the main goal “can only be to have fun. We will probably race the first kilometres with a car already in competition, as this type of vehicle demands a lot of specific tunings and only a few around the world can do it. Our team still does not know how to do it and we have been struggling to ensure the presence of a skilful technician in the Island. After all this turbulence, we want a calm rally, which can be used as a test and allows us to get to know the car better. Freitas started the rallies quite late, in 2013, and has given his first steps in the sports with Opel Kadett GT/E and Ascona 40. In the following year, he was behind the wheel of a Porsche and, except for the year 2017, when he drove a Citroen DS3 R5, he has been driving the German brand. In 2015, he was the National Champion of the RGT group. RVM will be his first competition in 2021.

Rally facts: Stardom Path

Throughout the years, Rali Vinho da Madeira has been launching to stardom several drivers who brighten the international sport stage. With great international prestige, the competition organized by Club Sports da Madeira registers, for example, the three absolute standings champions. In 1978, was on the Island Ari Vatanen awarded in the World Championship in 1981. In 1983, Massimo Biasion was also in the Island, becoming in 1988 and 1989 World Champion and, in 1986, racing in the competition Carlos Sainz, winner of the WRC in 1990 and 1992. In Madeira, there were at least 25 European champions, namely Adartico Vudafieri, Andrea Navarra, Armin Kremer, Armin Schwarz, Bruno Thiry, Carlo Capone, Cesar Baroni, Dario Cerrato, Enrico Bertone, Erwin Weber, Fabrizio Tabaton, Giandomenico Basso, Henrik Lundgaard, Jan Kopecky, Jean-Claude Andruet, Juho Hanninen, Krzysztof Holowicz, Luca Rossetti, Patrick Snijers, Piero Liatti, Renato Travaglia, Robert Droogmans, Simon Jean-Joseph, Toni Fassina and Yves Loubet.

Rally facts: debut of Renault Clio Rally5

Renault Clio Rally5 will race for its first competition in the Island in Rali Vinho da Madeira. Driven by Ricardo Gonçalves, the brand with a diamond shape logo is a strong bet in the popularity used in the competition. With rally5 using a new performance close to the previous R1, this vehicle has a very controlled cost. Nevertheless, it soon became a great model to compete, as it has different drivers competing for many trophies, in ERC and in many countries such as France, Italy, Switzerland or Spain.  Renault Clio rally5 has the Clio RS line and an engine of four cylinders with 1.330 cc. With a Life Racing electronic system, it can reach 6.500 rpm, using 180-horse power and a binary of 300 Nm. The transmission is made through a sequential 5 gear box from Sadev and a self-blocking deferential type ZF. In tarmac, it uses 16 inches rims and the nonadjustable shock absorbers, by Bos Suspension, control the suspension. The minimum weight is 1,080 kg.

Message from the Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture - Eduardo Jesus

The Regional Government supports the achievement of the “Rali Vinho da Madeira”, organized by Club Sports da Madeira, which is the greatest motorsport event performed in Madeira for 6 decades. We have a competition that, besides the strong connection it has with the local people, can be considered a tourist animation centre, as it brings to the Autonomous Region of Madeira not only fans but also the whole commercial and sports engine of drivers and teams involved. The rally, besides the contribution coming from outside the island to the Regional economy, also has the particularity to revival local business spread all over the Island, where the racing cars drive by, as the numbers of fans follow them year after year.  On the other hand, our cooperation for the “Rali Vinho da Madeira” to be back on the roads is justified by the impact it has in the promotion and disclosure of the Madeira Destination, as a result of other important sports events here achieved, that are part of the annual calendar of Tourism Animation of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.  Madeira is a Tourism Destination of recognized quality, with great statement. Being so, we create conditions in order to always have such events, with great mediatic, social and economic impact, allowing to amplify the visibility of the Region through diversified events for different audiences. An acknowledgement is due to the Club Sports Madeira and his whole team involved in the achievement of one more Rali Vinho da Madeira” edition. The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture  Eduardo Jesus

Ahead of the RGT

Once again, Filipe Freitas will race in this Rali Vinho da Madeira edition behind the wheel of a Porsche 991 GT3, with which he is planning to “be ahead of the RGT. Without considering the absolute standings, we will try to race as much to the finishing line as possible and, as we have been achieving in the previous championships, perform for the spectators who will be watching us on the roads. In terms of challenges, if the temperatures keep on rising we might have a problem with overheating of the tires. This will probably be the highest challenge, to manage well the tires.  49 years old, Freitas has debuted in rallies in 1998 with a Citroen AX GTI. In the following year, he chose t be behind the wheel of a Citroen Saxo, a car that made him shine in the single brand competition. He is one of the competitors that has driven a wide range of vehicles and has obtained excellent standings with cars such as Renault Clio RS, Citroen Saxo Kit-Car, Opel Astra Kit-Car, VW Golf Kit-Car or Renault Clio S1600. He won his first absolute standing title in 2013 with a  Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X and was Champion in 2016 with a Porsche 997 GT3. In 2021, he is in the 7th position of the championship, after having been in the 4th in Ribeira Brava and withdrew in Machico.

Official online board in the 2021 RVM edition

This year’s Rali Vinho da Madeira edition will have a new format of the official board competition. Until last year, the competitors, main part interested in the information published, could check such information in a board placed in the Rally Control Centre of the Organization Committee, which has been at the Dr Horário Bento de Gouveia School. This year, the whole information will be in the official board on the website https://ralivm.com/2021/pt Every time there is an update, a text message will be sent, allowing anyone to check the information. This innovation is going to fasten the search for any documentation, making the whole process a lot easier.

Drive as much as possible

João Ferreira faces the next Rali Vinho da Madeira with a new car, Citroen DS3 R3T, “a completely different from the previous vehicle he was racing, which means very different driving skills. Being so, my ambition for this competition will be slightly more cautious than I usually am and I want to drive as much as possible, in order to get to know the car better. Even because my car is a normal R37, without the upgrade of electronic, suspension and breaks of Max’s car and it is very difficult to compete in normal circumstances, with some of my opponents. By the end of the rally, I hope I will be more comfortable with the car.  Ferreira is 49 years old and he started the rallies in 2004 with a Toyota Starlet and from an early age was fighting for the first standings in his category and in the single brand driven with its model. The following year, he switched to the Citroen Saxo, which kept being his vehicle until 2008, always being a great protagonist in his category. In 2009, he got a Citroen C2R2 and won the Eng. Rafael Costa Trophy. Since then, he did not race regularly in the rallies until 2019. In 2020, he returned to the competition with a Citroen C2 and in the previous Marítimo Rally, he debuted the Citroen DS3 R3T.

Rally facts: international debuts

The harsh and demanding roads of the Island in the first Rali Vinho da Madeira editions challenged the drivers with multiple difficulties in order to achieve average speed, impossible at a time when this type of competition was regular and was decided by the minimum penalties. Recently, a very technical asphalt did not reduce the level of success in a competition that also demands perfect knowledge of roads that impose perfect trajectories. Being so, there was an idea that it would almost be impossible for a driver to win his first competition. As a contrast of such idea, nine foreign drivers already won their premier in the competition in Madeira. Such conquests were achieved by the French Jean-Pierre Nicolas, in 1967 with a Renault R8 Gordini, by the Finnish Ari Vatanen, in a Ford Escort RS in 1978, by the Italian Toni Fassina, with the powerful Lancia Stratos em 1979, by the Luxembourgish Ali Kridel, in  1981 behind the wheel of a Ford Escort RS, by the Italian Massimo Biasion, in 1983 with a Lancia Rally 037, by the Finnish Henri Toivonen, in the following year, driving a Porsche 911 SC, by the Spanish Salvador Serviá, in 1985 with a Lancia Rally 037, by the Italian Fabrizio Tabaton, in 1986 with the very insightful Lancia Delta S4, and again in 1992, also by the Italian Andrea Aghini, driving a Lancia Delta Integrale 16V.  In 2021 the Rali Vinho da Madeira will have, as debuts, the Spanish Jan Solans, driving a Citroën C3 Rally2, and Francisco Santana Castro in a less recent Opel Corsa B Kit-Car.

Rally facts: the debut of Ford Fiesta

The next Rali Vinho da Madeira edition will have, for the first time in Madeira, the Ford Fiesta R5 MkII, driven by Rui Pinto. This vehicle was developed by the British M- Sports and introduced in 2019 as an answer to new models in the category, as well as other improvements of the opponents’’ cars. This car is an evolution of the first Ford Fiesta R5, one of the most widespread in its category. In comparison to such vehicle, it presents a new coachbuilder, balanced with a new design of the car, a redesigned engine, a new gearbox and new aluminium shock absorbers that allow a considerable advantage in the weight of the vehicle. Ford fiesta has a 4-cylinder engine with about 1600 cc and gifted with a turbocharger with restrictor of 32 mm. It debits a little less than 475 Nm in 4.000 rpm. The transmission is made through a 5-speed gearbox of the French Sadev. The suspension is by Reiger and the breaks are by Brembo. It has a weight close to 1.230 kg.

Have fun for the audience and for me

Ricardo Teodósio will use the new Skoda Fabia Rally 2 Evo and, just as before, in this Rali Vinho da Madeira, he wants to be “the best amongst all competitors of CPR. This is a very difficult rally and, except in 2018, that I had the 4th place, things have not always been as I wanted. In Madeira, there are always unforeseen situations, something always happens or we make the wrong choices. In such occasions, we have to run against all odds. In 2021, we do not want to have the problems we had before, as it is much easier when things go well. I wish I can achieve a great standing and have fun with the audience.” Ricardo is 45 years old and, after being in different motorsports had his debut in the rallies 20 years ago. He drove for many years several versions of Mitsubishi Lancer Evo and has always stood out due to his exuberant driving, being able to create enthusiasm to the spectators and a wide range of devoted fans. In 2018, he drove a Skoda Fabia R5 and the year after that became the National Champion, in 2020, he did not win any rally competitions and this year he is the second in the Portuguese Championship of Rallies and second in Castelo Branco Rally.

Press conference with the list of entries of the 2021 edition of RVM

The Organizing Committee of Rali Vinho da Madeira has the honour to invite your means of communication to the official Press Conference of the list of entries in the RVM 2021 edition. The conference will take place at Avenida Arriaga, next to the headquarters of the Club Sports Madeira, entity that organizes the competition, on the 28th July, at 5.30 p.m. Grateful in advance for your presence, The Organizing Committee

Enjoying the rally to the fullest

Luis Miguel Rego, from Azores, is back to Madeira with the idea of enjoying the rally to the fullest and promote Azores in such beautiful Island of Madeira. “I’ve found this rally last year and I believe it’s one of the best in asphalt. It is a competition that demands deep knowledge and so, in 2021, we will be fighting against ourselves, trying to improve our 2020 performance. Rali Vinho da Madeira has a very competitive list of entries, being so, we will be doing the maths throughout the competition to know where we will be standing. And that’s why we promise to do our best”. Rego is 30 years old and started the rally in 2008 with a Mitsubishi Carisma GT. Two years later, he changed to the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, improving his performance and, a year and a half later, being able to watch its outcome. In 2016, he was behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta and got his first triumph in the Azores Championship the following year. In 2018 and 2019 Rego became the Regional Champion of such sport, a titles that he still holds, as in 2020 there were no championships performed in the Archipelago of the Azores. In 2021, he represents the Azores in the National Championship and he is the 5th in that Archipelago, after he withdrew in the opening championship of the Rali Ilha Azul.

Great Expectation

Ricardo Gonçalves will be in the next RVM Edition, driving a Renault Clio Rally5, in its first participation of such model in the Island. The Madeiran driver reveals, “There is a great expectation. I will have a car ready to race and I will be in a team that gives me guaranties “I’ve been dating” with the Rally 5 for about 2 years and, although I have tried to compete with this car, I was not able to do so. This car has great performance and is in the ranking of a new type of the sport. It should have similar performance of the previous R2 as it has a great engine, suspension and transmission. I am hoping I can enjoy this experience with a great outcome, as close to the highest standings as possible." Gonçalves started the rallies in 2007 with a Toyota Starlet and switched to a Toyota Yaris the following year, being able to conquer the victory in the competition. Between 2015 and 2019, he was mostly on the wheel of a Citroen C2 R2 and had reached great standing in his class. In 2021, he has already used two models and had to withdraw due to a mechanical issue of the Renault Clio RS in Ribeira Brava, still being able to complete the Marítimo Rally with a Citroen Saxo.

700 Police Marshals ensure safety measures

This morning, at the Rally Control Centre of RVM 2021, located at Horácio Bento de Gouveia School, the Organization Committee, together with the Police and Civil Protection Department, have concluded the details about the road safety measures. The circulation of vehicles and concentration of the spectators during the days of the rally were topics debated between the Clerk of the Course and the police marshals who will be, this year, in several work shifts in a total of 700. Although rally maintains, basically, the same schedule, the major concern is still the circulation of cars as well as the spectators who will watch the rally. A change regarding last edition in 2020 has to do with the Parade scheduled for Thursday, 5th August, at nightfall, that will close the Avenida do Mar way’s and Avenida das Comunidades, simultaneously, with Avenida Sá Carneiro, where the new Service Park will be assembled. In a brief approach of the 2021 edition of RVM, the Superintendent of the Police Fábio Castro, notified the specific places, namely the 10th and 14th PEC in Ponta de Sol and the 9th and 13th PEC in in Câmara de Lobos, where special attention for safety reasons of the rally will be needed.  The Organization Committee attended the meeting at the auditorium of the school, also having an active part of the meeting and showing once again the excellent interaction level between RVM and the Police Department.

Message from the President of C.S.Madeira and the organizing committee of RVM

Welcome to Rali Vinho da Madeira 2021
Club Sports da Madeira was authorised to organize the 2021 edition of our “Rali Vinho da Madeira”, the greatest Sports Event of our Autonomous Region and, more than an international sports event, the motorsport festivity, with the intense emotion of how several generations of local people live and feel as a rally of their own. Unfortunately, it will not yet be this year that all splendour of Rali Vinho da Madeira may be on the roads of the Island. If there is a lesson we can learn, for the time that we have been living with the COVID 19, is that it can be unpredictable, and for that reason, more dangerous than ever. Every day, we are surprised with new waves and variants, with advances and retreats of the pandemic measures to end it. Being so, we are forced to follow the maximum security rules and forced to remove from the program the competition stages that may lead to the concentration of spectators, keeping active all rules included in the Contingency Plan approved by the Health Authorities for the organization of this Sports Event. As last year’s edition, we rely on you all! With your responsibility and highly civic sense. Everyone going on the roads must have the conscience and duty regarding social and physical distance, the use of face protection and hand sanitization. Over all, we are summoned to follow our obligations, in order to overcome this pandemic crisis. Being so, on behalf of the Club Sports da Madeira and my own, for those who want to watch the rally, I suggest you all get vaccinated. The watchwords are to get vaccinated and to get tested, so that we can have a safe rally, in terms of local contamination and Public Health. Nevertheless, it is imperative that we can go back to the festivity and joy that this International Sports Event brings out in all of us and in its contribution to the tourism promotion of Madeira and for its economic activity’s revival.  I share with you all a market research that FIA performed, recently, about the impact that Motorsports has in World Economy. According to the presented results, motor sports generates a worldwide turnover of about 160 billion euros, 1,5 million direct and indirect jobs, as there are more than 300.000 technical clerks, 2,7 million competitors and 60.700 motorsports competitions per year, which means about 5.000 per month and about 1.200 per week. These numbers are impressive and in this time, that we all are trying hard to return to a normal economic activity and prioritize the economy and the creation of new jobs, we can see the real impact that the sports events have in the countries and regions where they are accomplished. It also gives us the certainty of the enormous competition in all motor sports organized under the aegis of FIA- Federação Internacional do Automóvel (International Automobile Federation). This is not the forum or the proper place to debate this issue. Nevertheless, we want to reassure the many transformations and challenges that the organizations of these events face, not only because of the number of competitions but also because of its geographic spread, its economic and financial power of the countries and regions and the investment in competitions using cars with new, less polluting energy sources. And so, Portugal must be in the front line, and so should Madeira Island, given the image and prestige that Rali vinho da Madeira has conquered in an international level, that must be valued and appreciated. We must also analyse the strong economic and social impact of our international Motorsport Events in the economic activity of our country, of our region and our municipalities. Therefore, we must support the organization of such competitions in order to have it included in the Worldwide and European Rallies’ elite. Due to the budget restraints and circulation of people and goods, the Club Sports da Madeira has kept the same program and itinerary, similar to the 2020 edition of Rali Vinho da Madeira, in order to reduce costs and expenses with its organization. As for our investment this year, it is in the enhancement of the drivers and competitors’ presence of the National Championships and the Rallies Championship of Coral da Madeira without forgetting Spain, through the Iberian European Rally Trophy, which will be, in the future, a great investment in the Rallies’ Organizations of both Iberian countries. And it is, once again, reassured, the competition and sport fight on the roads of Madeira Island, during the first weekend of August, in the excellent list of 50 entries, as we have 31 competitors from Madeira, two from Spanish and 17 from the Mainland. The highlight is for the presence of the FIA priority driver, the Madeiran Alexandre Camacho, who is in this selected list, where we can only find 42 other drivers, most of them fighting for the World Championship of Rallies, which is a remarkable fact to be registered as a statement of Madeiran values in a worldwide level, also in the motor sports. Besides this Champion, we have the Portuguese Champion with a title – Armindo Araújo and the Champion from Madeira, Miguel Nunes, as well as many other former National Champions, Ricardo Teodósio, Bruno Magalhães, José Pedro Fontes, Bernardo Sousa, Pedro Meireles, Adruzilo Lopes and many other very young and promising drivers, in some of the most competitive cars fighting for the European rallies, besides other car debut both in the Region and in Portugal.  Another important highlight is for the presence of the talented young Spanish driver, Jan Solans, officially representing the Spanish Citroen and a Junior World champion, who will perform his debut in our stage queen. All conditions are, hereby, gathered in order to have one more excellent edition of the Rali Vinho da Madeira, even with all restrictions that are implemented to fight the covid-19 pandemic. To all, a great rally, always with maximum safety and the certainty that “rally is not from Madeira, is for Madeira”, from all of us!
